Spanning 48.385 kilometers, the Fengjie-Wushan section of the Ankang-Laifeng National Expressway will contribute to the development of regional transportation and tourism and improve economic conditions in surrounding mountain areas. The project presented a complex construction environment, compounded by tight schedules and numerous multidiscipline participants that traditional design methods could not accommodate. China Railway Changjiang Transport wanted to implement 3D BIM and construction simulation as part of China’s smart roads initiative. 

To achieve their digital goals, they selected Bentley’s reality and open modeling applications to build an intelligent BIM integrated management system. Working in a connected digital environment facilitated collaborative modeling and virtual design reviews, improving communication efficiencies by 30% and reducing design time by 300 hours to save CNY 1 million. The accurate construction simulation and earthworks calculation improved site management, saving an additional CNY 10 million and shortening the construction period by 50 days. The project lays the foundation to realize a digital twin for smart lifecycle expressway management.

To reduce congestion and improve connectivity between Jakarta and Cikampek, the Indonesian government initiated development of this second Jakarta-Cikampek toll road. Spanning 27.85 kilometers and featuring three interchanges, seven main bridges, and 18 overpasses, the project was on a fast-track schedule to sustain economic growth in these two vital cities. PT Waskita Karya faced communication challenges, compounded by extreme terrain that previous CAD-based and BIM software could not accommodate on the accelerated timeline. 

To overcome the engineering challenges, Waskita leveraged ContextCapture, OpenRoads, and OpenBridge to produce a reality mesh of 574 hectares and 3D BIM models of the proposed roadway and bridges. They combined the models, generating a project digital twin on a web-based portal to visually communicate project progress to stakeholders in real time. Working in an open, connected data environment accelerated earthworks calculations and drawing production and reduced risks, saving approximately USD 100,000. The digital solution sets a benchmark for implementing sustainable construction business processes.

The new Bocimi toll road is expected to relieve congestion along the Bogor-Sukabumi national road, reducing travel time from two hours to 30 minutes, as well as improving economic conditions in the surrounding Sukabumi area. PT Waskita Karya (Waskita) is the main contractor for section 2 of the toll road, spanning 11.9 kilometers. The high risk for potential landslides at the construction site presented earthworks challenges that current manual survey measurement methods could not timely accommodate.
To address these issues and ensure precise construction sequencing, Waskita needed to establish digital construction processes. 

Leveraging ContextCapture, OpenRoads, and PLAXIS, Waskita developed 3D BIM workflows, shortening earthworks calculations and reporting times from two weeks to five days. They combined the 3D model with the work schedule data to simulate the construction plan using SYNCHRO. To reduce congestion along the Great Eastern Highway Bypass, which serves as a critical connector between two major highways in Perth, new grade-separated interchanges will replace the current signalized intersections used by more than 60,000 motorists daily. Arcadis was awarded the design and construction contract and wanted to implement a digital engineering execution plan that previous legacy processes could not accommodate. They realized that they needed to develop an integrated digital ecosystem.

Leveraging OpenRoads, OpenBridge, and ProjectWise, Arcadis established a connected data environment, streamlining workflows to reduce multidiscipline design review time from two to three months to two to three weeks. The automated and digitized processes saved a total of AUD 1.1 million in costs and reduced environmental impact by 42 hectares. The Takitimu North Link project is being constructed in two stages by Waka Kotahi (New Zealand Transport Agency) and upon completion will offer more varied public transport and improved safety in the Western Bay of Plenty, supporting economic development and population growth. Stage one is a 6.8-kilometer expressway, including 10 bridges and a separated pedestrian path, being built by a Fulton Hogan/HEB Joint Venture, in a challenging natural environment constrained by existing infrastructure and residents. Beca is the lead design consultant and wanted to implement an integrated, model-based digital approach to address the site complexities and coordinate the large, multidiscipline project team.

Leveraging Bentley’s open modeling applications, Beca established a connected data environment and digital twin that will simplify construction in the constrained location. Through collaborative digital modeling and 3D visualization, they reduced modeling time by 15% and improved design efficiencies by 20%, while achieving higher-quality deliverables compared to previous design methods. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) initiated the 68.5-kilometer Kotido-Kaabong Roadway project dedicated to rural revitalization and development of the tourism economy in northwest Uganda. Located in a wild nature preserve, the project presented survey and construction challenges, compounded by multidiscipline coordination amid a tight schedule. The project site also required special consideration of the ecological and natural environment and the protection of wild animals, as well as avoiding land loss and soil pollution. Realizing that their traditional design methods were insufficient, the team needed an integrated digital platform capable of whole process management.

To reduce backups on existing highway infrastructure and improve freight connections, regional mobility, and airport access, WSDOT initiated the SR 509 Completion Project to build a new four-lane expressway, offering a north-south alternative to the congested I-5 corridor between Seattle and south King County. The project is being constructed in three stages, with the final stage being completed in 2028. To better communicate the design concept to stakeholders and the public, WSDOT wanted to present a virtual representation. 

Leveraging MicroStation and OpenRoads, WSDOT generated a 3D model of the entire project and exported the model to LumenRT, where people, vehicles, and environmental content are integrated to create a realistic, animated rendering. The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program (IBR) will replace the aging bridge across the Columbia River with a modern, seismically resilient structure that provides improved mobility for people, goods, and services. WSP is the general engineering consultant and wanted to implement digital twins throughout the lifecycle of the project. Faced with coordination challenges engaging with contractors, the public, and government entities, WSP needed an integrated digital delivery platform. 

They selected the iTwin Platform and ProjectWise, creating
a structured framework and information management processes that support BIM transportation strategies and the development of digital twins. Working in the iTwin environment, WSP estimates saving USD 470 million on the IBR program. Compared to traditional project delivery methods, they will nearly eliminate remodeling efforts during construction and realize a 90% reduction in operational inspection activities. During design and planning of the carbon footprint analysis alone, they expect a 67% reduction in costs.

To ensure productivity through digital delivery, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) established a team to update standard workflows and develop new digital tools to meet state requirements for documenting project quantities for cost estimation and asset management. The team faced challenges configuring the various structure quantity tools, including item types and report definitions. They needed an open, integrated technology solution to streamline and automate the new quantity processes.

Using OpenBridge and OpenRoads, the FDOT team utilized item type features as the foundation to standardize and build custom applications that would read project data from the design files and process the data to generate reports required for road and bridge quantity documentation. The new digital FDOT quantities takeoff manager and estimated quantity reporting tools automate and standardize quantity data, eliminating plan sheets for all new design and improvement projects. The new digital workflow is expected to significantly reduce the time and effort required to document project quantities, estimated to save USD 3 million annually.

To improve local travel times, access control, and safety along the I-495 corridor in Fairfax, Virginia, officials initiated a plan to add 2.5 miles of new high occupancy travel lanes and 3 miles of shared-use paths to the roadway. Lane Construction faced challenges given the size and scope of the project, needing to ensure delivery on time and within budget. They partnered with WSB to build a 3D model of the design, requiring integrated, cloud-based technology to minimize costs and accelerate the project schedule.

Leveraging Bentley’s open modeling applications, they established a connected data environment and 3D model, facilitating real-time collaboration and transparency. Using SYNCHRO to link the model with the construction schedule, they identified 15 redundant tasks, eliminating 60 days from the schedule, shortening the construction period. The team generated material takeoffs directly from the model for more accurate quantity and cost estimations.

To improve overall mobility and accommodate increased current and future travel demands, Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is widening and constructing four new express lanes along US 183. The project includes adding connector ramps for increased accessibility, infrastructure to support tolling and new sidewalks, and bicycle and pedestrian paths. Parsons is the design lead and required an integrated technology solution to meet the owner’s extensive 3D deliverable requirements for road, bridge, utility, and
drainage models.

Parsons selected Bentley’s open modeling applications and the iTwin Platform, enabling coordinated modeling and web-based, interactive design reviews, identifying and resolving conflicts prior to requiring expensive on-site corrections. The City of Perry hired Foth to evaluate street and sidewalk conditions using mobile LiDAR scanning to improve access for citizens. The project quickly morphed into a citywide digital twin project to support the city’s capital improvement plan (CIP), presenting technical challenges for digitizing over 60 miles of streets and 10 miles of alleyways. Foth needed integrated technology to process voluminous geospatial data, aerial images, and point clouds, and provide digital accessibility to multiple stakeholders. 

Leveraging Bentley’s open modeling applications, Foth developed an optimal plan to deliver the digital twin, saving significant time and potential rework. The 500-gigabyte 3D city model contains approximately USD 598 million worth of asset data. The digital twin provides potential investors with a portfolio of data about historical structures, making them more inclined to invest in Perry and helping increase private investor engagement by 50% over the next five years. Having a digital twin enables Perry to gain support and enact its CIP 60% faster, increasing its ability to secure city funding by 75%.

As part of the Smart Motorways initiative to drive collaboration, streamline information sharing, and reduce risk when delivering road improvements across England’s Strategic Road Network, National Highways (NH) is delivering their Business Information Framework (BIF). Faced with data silos and manual manipulation resulting in limited access and erroneous decision-making, NH and their partner want to provide enterprise, web-based data access to project disciplines and stakeholders. 

They selected BCDE and the iTwin Platform to establish a digital twin, making federated 3D design and asset data accessible via links with ProjectWise and AssetWise. The Bentley-based BIF improves productivity, design efficiency, and decision-making, while shortening project schedules. Through open asset data and re-use of data assets, they estimate saving GBP 70 million. Using the digital twin model to integrate asset and document data, the BIF solution already reduced design hours and avoided rework, serving as a key enabler of the Smart Motorway Initiative being rolled out across major projects.

To optimally maintain and manage Bern’s 2,200-kilometer canton roadway network, a condition analysis is performed every four years. For the first time, Grunder Ingenieure AG used a 3D mobile mapping system instead of a conventional measuring vehicle. They faced data integration, management, and accessibility challenges, compounded by a tight six-month timeline. They realized that to process, store, and share the 4,400-kilometer point cloud and over 10 million images, they needed a powerful, neutral visual platform. 

They selected Orbit 3DM to integrate the voluminous captured digital data with the public authority’s existing roadway management software. Using Orbit 3DM provided the multiple planning offices with unlimited access to the digital twin for corrective maintenance, eliminating the need for on-site inspections and extending 3D digital data application beyond road condition analysis. The combined technology strategy provides an intelligent urban management solution that they expect will benefit other areas of the country in the future.

AFRY was selected by commercial vehicle manufacturer SCANIA to design a new test track to test and drive electric and autonomous technology for heavy vehicles. The test track includes 19 kilometers of roads with more than 60 intersections and junctions, though complex, hilly ground conditions will make layout difficult. Since changing any single element would impact numerous others, AFRY needed a flexible, accessible design environment.

They determined Bentley applications could model the track while ensuring tight change management and constructability. AFRY used the applications to produce accurate 3D models enriched with project data, as well as to verify the impact of design on the environment and calculate the amount of earthwork required. The ability to produce dynamic relationships between models reduced modeling time by 30%, and automated drawing production saved 30 resource hours. The applications helped AFRY detect and remove errors in the design stage, saving millions of Swedish crowns in rework and helping them take the lead in developing sustainable transport solutions.

A EUR 2.4 million project involved renovating the century-old bridge over the Llobregat River and its access roads in Cabrianes, Barcelona. The bridge features various existing elements that required integration with newly renovated components. During the initial project phase, the bridge had not been modeled, making it difficult for engineers and construction staff to visualize and fully understand the design intent and construction plans. Comsa SAU was hired to implement collaborative BIM processes for the entire project. They needed integrated 3D modeling technology to streamline workflows and make the model accessible to the entire multidiscipline team.

Comsa selected MicroStation, OpenRoads, and OpenBuildings to establish a collaborative 3D modeling environment, helping model different geological and structural elements and link them into an integrated BIM model. Using Bentley’s applications, Comsa identified errors prior to on-site construction. The integrated digital solution facilitated better project understanding and optimized construction monitoring. Construction along Section C of the A1 Highway in Poland will provide a direct connection from the Czech border to Poland’s tri-city ports, supporting the country’s economic development. The 17-kilometer project included design and construction of new structures, as well as reconstruction and integration of existing infrastructure. Multiconsult Polska was retained as chief designer and faced coordination challenges implementing standard modeling processes.

They used ContextCapture to generate a reality mesh of the existing infrastructure and project site, while OpenBridge, OpenRoads, and OpenBuildings helped to model the new utility networks, roadways, and additional equipment. Working in a connected data environment streamlined collaboration and accelerated design changes. By establishing integrated digital design and data workflows, they identified and resolved clashes, saving significant construction costs and 90% of drafting time compared to prior manual methods. After a bridge collapse in northern Italy, Italferr S.p.A. was tasked with designing a new viaduct. The structure will be a pivotal point for the city, county, and country’s transportation. The project team needed to use the same footprint as the original structure, measuring over 1,000 meters in length and consisting of 19 steel-concrete spans. The EUR 202 million project also needed to follow a tight schedule. 

Italferr S.p.A. implemented a BIM model along with Bentley’s connected data environment based on ProjectWise. The project team used Bentley applications to create digital models of the terrain, road, civil works, and mechanical and electrical systems. Bentley applications helped reduce design costs and improve collaboration due to faster decision-making, more accurate calculations, and better management of revisions. Currently in the construction phase, the project is on schedule for
a June 2020 completion.

The Borratino Viaduct is 1,300 meters long, made of reinforced concrete, and features approximately 50 spans. Italferr was tasked with surveying and modeling the structure but faced technical and coordination challenges given its sheer size and shape, requiring numerous technologies to effectively capture and model it. They needed a flexible reality modeling application and a connected data environment. 

Italferr selected ContextCapture to process the voluminous amount of multisourced data, point clouds, and photos into an accurate reality mesh, and ProjectWise to enable intelligent exchange of all survey data and models. The flexibility and interoperability of ContextCapture enabled them to work dynamically and digitally, reducing processing times for a large quantity of data that was not possible with other software. Located along the Vltava waterway, the bridge structures crossing the Vraňany-Hořín Canal were built between 1903 and 1905, making these bridges too old to meet current requirements for road and shipping traffic. To modernize the bridge structures, SUDOP PRAHA a.s. was hired to perform design works, increasing the underpass height under the bridges from 4.5 meters to 7 meters. The project required meeting the investor’s BIM data, design, and modeling specifications, including enabling the use of non-graphical digital data for subsequent facilities management. Therefore, SUDOP realized that they needed to establish a connected data environment.

SUDOP selected MicroStation® to develop the 3D bridge models and ProjectWise® as a collaborative platform to manage and share data and models with the investor and contractors. Using Bentley’s applications, they optimized coordination and accelerated modeling time. Working in a digitally integrated environment, they used 3D BIM models during construction and for facilities management, verifying the use of BIM methodologies in the future.
